Creeping phlox (Phlox subulata) is a lovely old fashioned favorite often seen growing in masses along banksides. It makes a great groundcover plant, as well as an edging plant, and is absolutely gorgeous when accompanied by spring blooming bulbs, such as tulips and hyacinth. In addition, due to it’s spreading habit, it works well in rock gardens, too.

You can expect an eye-catching show of color, in early to mid spring, in shades of white, pink and lavender blue. With each plant, you will enjoy a mat of flowers that is six inches in height and one and a half feet or more in width. In addition to color, creeping phlox are adorned with creeping stems that are clothed in half-inch needlelike evergreen to semievergreen leaves. With it’s bright color and texture (as well as scent), it will make a great addition to any spring garden.

Creeping phlox planting and plant care:

- Tolerates dry locations
- Plant in full sun (minimum of six hours)
- Deer resistant
- Plant in loose, not-too-rich soil
- Moderate waterings
- After flowering, cut back halfway
