Decorating for Christmas: Then and Now

Would it surprise you to know that some of today’s Christmas decorating styles date back to before the birth of Christ? Strangely enough, some of the earlier European settlers in North America rarely decorated for Christmas at all. But by the mid 1800’s, Christmas became more of a family holiday and decorating the Christmas tree became a central part of the holiday celebration. Back in those days, Christmas food, such as nuts, sugar rods, honey cakes and other Christmas candy, were primarily used as decorations. The introduction of Old World products from France and Italy ,such as blown glass and nutcrackers, started the shopping craze and the rest is history.

Today, the art of Christmas decorating has changed somewhat. Though most of us still stay with a traditional feel, others may like a more modern, whimsical look. Themed trees are equally as popular. And if you’re decorating on a budget, anything goes.

Think outside the box and discover new and innovative ways to spice up your Christmas tree each year. Glass balls and white lights will give your tree an elegant sparkle. The use of ribbons and bows will add depth and charm to your tree. And why do all the presents have to be “under “the tree? Wrap empty boxes with Christmas paper, add decorative silk bows and tuck them” into” your tree. If you’re watching your wallet this season, try baking giant gingerbread men; make stars from aluminum foil, or simply add a few store bought ornaments to a tabletop tree.

Overall, Christmas is a time for family and celebrating. May the wonderful spirit of Christmas be with you all this holiday season.
