10 Great Perennials for Fall Gardens

Mother Nature eases us into cooler weather with warm, vibrant fall foliage and blooms. The honey
wheat color of ornamental grass plumes, golden yellow of Solidago, smokey purple of Perovski (Russian Sage) and the sky-blue of Caryopteris are just a few colors that will revitalize your fall gardens and landscape. Fall bloomers tend to blossom in jewel tones: purples, rusts, scarlets and golds, all adding warmth and richness to our environment. For fall bloomers to be hardy in your garden, you need to plant and establish them earlier in the season. To ensure a glorious display, you may need to stake your plants or earlier in the season do some periodic pruning. If you prune your plants, you will be delaying the bloom period by a week or more.


	10. Asters A diverse group of plants that present eye-catching hues from dark purple to pink. “Purple Dome” (pictured) is a profuse bloomer with a compact habit. It grows 15-18 inches tall with deep purple flowers. Other hardy asters to try are ‘Alert,’ ‘Prof. Anton Kippenberg’ and ‘Wood’s Pink.’	No Image Available
	9. Caryopteris A favorite of butterflies! Reaching 36 to 48 inches tall, this woody perennial has silvery-gray foliage to contrast its blooms that range from sky blue to deep dark purple.
	8. Chelone (Turtlehead) A carefree fall blooming perennial whose only real dislike is excessive dry heat. Reaching 24 to 36 inches tall, it grows in a dense clump with red, pink or white flowers shaped like turtle heads!
