Available in both annual and perennial varieties, this easy-to-care-for, eye-catching flower makes a dramatic and impressive statement! With blooms ranging from four to twelve (yes, twelve!) inches in diameter, this lovely plant boasts much color and lush foliage, adding texture and movement to any container or garden! A must have! Read on to learn more...

Hibiscus (rosa-sinesis)

Without a doubt, this is one of the most popular tropical plants we have at Fairview! This stunning annual plant features huge blooms (4”-5” W) in a variety of hues (reds, pinks, white, yellow), with a wide variety of throat colors as well (blooms last 1-2 days each). It is most commonly used in containers (not concrete) by itself, but rest assured you can make a combination container that features this stunning tropical! The hibiscus can be used inside or outside, as long as it gets enough sun. (Note: Hibiscus loves full sun, but can take some shade. (If plant does not bloom put in a sunnier location.) It will continue to bloom profusely as long as the temperatures remain 55 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
If hibiscus is overwintered in a sunny spot indoors, make sure to prune it in early February before the buds appear. Doing so will help the hibiscus rejuvenate itself and bloom again in the spring.Attracts Hummingbirds.

Hardy Hibiscus (perennial)

Blossoms as big as a dinner plate! The hardy hibiscus is an easy way to add flair to your garden with huge flowers and lush foliage. The hardy hibiscus presents red, white and pink flowers. Blooms range from quilted to smooth and solid colored to veined or striped. Each 6 to 12-inch wide flower lasts just one day, but the plant is covered with enough buds to give you constant color from midsummer to frost.

For best performance, plant your hardy hibiscus in sun to part shade, in moist, well drained soil and fertilize after the plant is established. Fertilize during the growing season. In areas with cold winters (zones 7 and colder), hardy hibiscus dies back to the ground. Cut the dead stems back in fall or spring. You can also make tall hibiscus shorter and bushy by cutting back by one-third to one-half in June. This will delay the start of flowering by a couple of weeks.

There is no limit to the number of design choices you have with this showy plant. Add to the back of the border, planted in a mass, as a specimen, around a water feature, among trees and shrubs. The hardy hibiscus attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and neighbors!
