  terra cotta birdbath

Terra Cotta Birdbath

Okay, so this isn’t something you can use during the winter months but it is a fun little project for cooler days indoors and can be used in a couple of months when the weather begins to get a little warmer. Often overlooked, water is vital for birds to survive and placing a birdbath in your yard will encourage our feathered friends to visit your yard, which in turn will help get rid of a few of the critters that lurk. Let’s get started...

Materials Needed

- 16” or Larger Terra Cotta Clay Pot
- 16” or Larger Terra Cotta Clay Saucer
- Decoration of Choice (If Any): Rub-On Decals, Acrylic Paint/Brushes/Sponges/Stencils
- Clear Acrylic Sealer Spray
- Newspaper
- Glue
- Old Cloth

Putting It All Together
This simple project is a great way to introduce your little ones to birds, making them more aware of the world around them. First, wipe your clay pot and saucer with a damp cloth making sure any residue is removed. Next, lay your newsprint to help minimize cleanup later and decorate them in any way you choose; you can either purchase rub on decals or acrylic paints and paint your own design (or use stencils!). Anything you choose, it will be fun for the little ones!

Once your birdbath pieces are decorated, take them outside to a well ventilated area (adults only!) and seal them with an acrylic spray (available at your local craft store in the spray paint aisle); this will help with the longevity of your design. Allow the acrylic sealer to dry thoroughly. Once dried, turn your flower pot upside down so that the bottom of the pot is facing you and apply glue to the bottom. Next, take the saucer and place it right side up on top of the pot base, centering it evenly. Allow glue to dry and you have a new birdbath! Once the weather warms up, place your birdbath in a sunny spot when the weather isn’t hot and as summer approaches, move it to a more shady spot so the water doesn’t get too hot.

Have Fun!
