Clementine Box Container Garden

Many people enjoy clementines as a tasty and healthy treat during this time of year. Next time you pick up a box, keep the wooden container they come in and create a container garden with your kids or grandchildren. This project offers an easy and economical way (not to mention green!) to introduce children to gardening. Let’s get started...

Materials Needed
- Clementine Box
- Potting Mix
- Newspaper
- Flowers
- Slow Release Fertilizer

Putting It All Together
First, make a trip to Fairview to purchase some flowers for your new container garden. Any type of annual, seasonal flower will work well. Next, lay down some newspaper on your working surface to help make cleanup a snap! Gently line the inside of the wooden clementine box with newspaper. The lining of newspaper will allow water to leak after waterings (which is needed to prevent root rot) and helps to keep the soil in the container.

Next, put a layer of potting mix (good soil, not top soil that is very sandy) about an inch or so deep. If your potting soil does not include fertilizer, sprinkle a layer of slow release fertilizer (like Osmocote) on top of the soil (read label for quantity). Finally, tease the roots of your flowers, place in the box, fill with soil and water thoroughly. Viola! A neat and economical container garden!
