Forcing Paperwhite Bulbs Indoors

The chill of winter is upon us and with that comes shorter days and more time spent indoors. Here is a fun and easy project to enjoy with your little ones, while adding some beauty to your holiday decor at the same time! Let’s get started...

Materials Needed

- Container Without Drainage Holes
- Clean Pebbles (1/4” -1/2” in diameter)
- Paperwhite Bulbs
- Water

Putting It All Together
Paperwhites are one of the easiest plants to bring to flower indoors, as they do not need a chilling period. These lovely plants, adorned with white, delicate flowers have a strong fragrance that many adore. First, you need to prepare your container by filling it with pebbles to within an inch of the rim. A terra cot or plastic pot both work well, or you can get creative and use a recycled container such as a small coffee can, mason jar, whatever! For more fun, embellish your recycled container by painting with acrylic paints, stickers, etc.

Next, set the bulbs on the surface of the pebbles, crowding them together so they almost touch one another. Add more pebbles, making sure the bottom third of the bulbs are covered. Finally, add water to your container making sure the water does not actually touch the bulbs as this may encourage mold. Move the bulbs to a cool location (60-65 degrees F) with little or no light. Yes, no light; the cool darkness actually encourages growth! After a week or two, have your children gently tug on the bulbs to test for root growth. Once the plants feel rooted, move them to a bright room without direct sunlight; they should flower in three to five weeks.

Tip: Paperwhites last longer when temperatures do not go above 65 degrees F. When placed in an environment that is too warm, they will grow quickly and become floppy. Use sticks and twine for support.

Have Fun & Happy Holidays!
