Toilet Paper Seed Tape

It is easy to “over sew” your seeds when getting your spring garden ready (both big kids and little kids alike). Some seeds are so small they can be difficult to separate and larger, more rounded seeds like to roll across the floor once dropped. Instead of fussing over seeds during sewing time, why not give this project a whirl ... it can be fun for the little ones, all the while eliminating the changes of over sewing.

Materials Needed
- A roll of white, unscented toilet paper
- Tape measure
- Newspaper
- Flour
- Water
- Seeds
- Mixing bowl
- Spoon
- Waterproof marker
- Q-Tips
- Spacing information for seeds (on packet)

What to Do

- First, cover your work area with newspaper.
- In a bowl, mix flour with just enough water to make a thick paste (the consistency of soupy mashed potatoes).
- Decide how long your garden is going to be and remove a strip of toilet paper that length.
- Select your seeds and note how far apart they need to be planted. Then, measure the toilet paper with your ruler, marking each place a seed is to go (with marker).
- Dip a Q-tip into your homemade glue mixture and place a drop where each seed is to go. A much quicker (and messier!) method is to put one long line of paste down the center.
- Place the seeds on the paste and let it dry.
- Make your trench the necessary depth for the seeds you have chosen and place toilet paper in soil. Cover with dirt and water thoroughly.
