Build a House for a Prince, I Mean a Toad!

You may think that you don’t want to attract toads to your yard, although nothing could be further from the truth! Unlike many critters we find lurking in our yard, toads are actually (or should be) some guests that are welcome. These bumpy creatures help our yards by consuming many of the pests that like to munch on our flowers and vegetables. So, if you’ve noticed these little guys, rest assured that you are well on your way to a nice ecosystem in your yard. If you don’t have them, there are a few things you can do to help attract them, such as providing shelter and water. Read on...

Shelter for toads is really rather simple. All you need is a clay pot, a trowel and a cool, moist place; a place in the shade is ideal as the hot North Carolina summers can make the area too dry. Once you have located the residence, so to speak, simply dig a hold deep enough to house part of your pot once it is on it’s side; a couple of inches should do the trick. Next, lay your clay pot on it’s side in the hole and bury it halfway. Add some damp leaves to create a bed inside the pot. Finally, moisten the area with some water to help keep it in place.

Now that you have the shelter taken care of, you need to supply your new friends with a water source. A shallow saucer, pie plate, etc. (you get the idea) will work best. Place an inch of cool water in the saucer and position it near the shelter, out of the hot sun. Before long, you should have a few additions to your yard!

Fun Fact: Did you know that toads “drink” through their skin?
