Plants That Do the Work for You, So to Speak
Picture this, it is the middle of August and daytime temperatures are reaching a whopping 100-plus degrees. You, like everyone else (well, most), want color in your yard but do not want to be outside in the heat tending to your plants. The solution? Choose a plant that will give a splash of color and perform well in the heat with little maintenance. Enter Double Knock Out Roses. These gems will provide your yard with a lot of color at very little maintenance. Though, they will need to be shaped twice a year to keep their great, rounded form (early spring and the middle of July, cut back to promote uniform growth). By shaping, you are keeping the plant from becoming leggy with sucker growth. Plus, deadheading occasionally will keep the plant shaped well as the growing season progresses. Two days of labor for a beautiful plant with lots of color, that isn’t too bad!
Another great choice is Juniper ‘Grey Owl.’ Although it may take awhile to get to size, it is definitely a great choice in the low maintenance landscape. I look at this plant as a low growing sculpture as it adds great color and texture to the landscape, plus there is virtually no maintenance to keep it looking great. Simply water the first year to get it rooted and watch it fill out beautifully. In addition, it looks great when planted near Double Knock Out Roses.
