Fall Color: Mum Alternatives

Fairview has a lot of choices for fall color, and you do not have to include a mum in the mix if you don’t want to! We have several options that will provide great color, texture and various heights to accommodate any container or bed you plan to design. Here, we have broken out various options into four handy categories: ornamental veggies, trailing plants, grasses and flowering and foliage plants. 	Ornamental Veggies Ornamental Peppers This very unusual plant will receive a lot of attention! Adds interest and height to any fall container. The peppers are not edible and range from white, purple and orange. Lasts until first hard frost. Full sun.
	Cardoon A perennial that grows six to eight feet tall. Has purple thistle-like flowers. When planting, space five feet apart. This plant resembles an artichoke plant. Full sun to some shade. Before planting, remove flower heads. If flowers are not removed and are allowed to bloom, then the plant will no longer continue to grow.
	Swiss Chard A biennial grown as an annual. Normally has green leaves with white stems. The variety ‘Bright Lights’ has stems of many colors. Maintains a large, loose and open growing habit. Full sun to some shade. Before planting, remove flower heads. If flowers are not removed and are allowed to bloom, then the plant will no longer continue to grow.
	Giant Red Mustard Greens Large red leaves with purple-red veins. Maintains a large, loose and open growing habit. Full sun to some shade. Before planting, remove flower heads. If flowers are not removed and are allowed to bloom, then the plant will no longer continue to grow. NO PIC AVAILABLE
	Pak Choi, Pac Choi, Bok Choi These three are all different spellings of the same plant. Beautiful white stems with green leaves. Full sun to some shade. Before planting, remove flower heads. If flowers are not removed and are allowed to bloom, then the plant will no longer continue to grow.
	Ornamental Cabbage & Kale Grown for their colorful foliage only. Great in mass plantings in landscapes, winter color in small beds and mixed with pansies. Also works in containers and window boxes. Full sun, but can take some shade. Once established, only water during dry periods. Pink, purple and white. 8” - 18” H. Cool weather enhances their color.
