A Little About Orchids

Of all flowering plants, orchids (orchidacae) are among the most exotic and spectacular. Did you know?: The orchid family is currently believed to be the second largest family of flowering plants with more than 25,000 species (and more being discovered each day).

Their cultural requirements are extremely varied. Orchids come from tropical regions that do not have distinct seasons like we are accustomed to, therefore seasonal changes affect them greatly. For example, wet and dry periods in the tropics that correspond with our warmer and cooler seasons. Most orchids that are grown as houseplants will adapt to our seasons by actively growing in more light and warmer temperatures and resting or blooming in cooler drier weather. Once you understand the basics of orchid care you will be able to grow and flower them year after year.

The moth orchid, or phalaenopsis, is the one most suited to grow in the home. They have long lasting sprays of moth-like blooms in a broad array of colors. Provided with modest light and consistent moisture, they will provide weeks of delightful bloom. The main flowering season is late winter and into spring, but growers today can make phalaenopsis bloom year round.

It is important to provide your orchid with bright light, but no direct sun. Foliage should be semi-erect and a medium olive green color. Dark green, limp foliage indicates too little light. Keep temperatures at 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit in the daytime and 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Water thoroughly then allow them to dry out before the next watering. Placing them on a tray of moistened rocks may be helpful during the winter months. Fertilize year round with a formula balanced specifically for orchids. Repotting should be done every one to two years, after flowering, with a well drained but water retentive mix. Select pot size by the root mass, not top size.

With proper care, your orchid will give you weeks of pleasure in your home or office.

Good Luck!
