Spring Into Color --- With Flowers!

Spring is in the air and if you are like most people, you are ready to get outside and enjoy it! You can make your outdoor environment more enjoyable (and colorful) with a few simple additions. Whether you are looking to create some custom containers for your front door entry way, a flower bed that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, or some hanging baskets for your porch--- we have the color and texture that will make your space “pop!” Not only do we carry many common plants like petunias, snapdragons, and geraniums, we also carry a vast line of specialty plants that are hard to find and are sure to be a treasure in your garden. In fact, our selection is so diverse we have been voted the Best Garden Center of Western Wake County two years in a row! --(Cary Magazine, Cary, NC 2007 & 2008)

As you may (or may not!) already know, Jo Ann Dewar started Fairview Greenhouses & Garden Center thirty-some years ago out of a passion for gardening. Her passion continues to thrive, not only within her, but through her children and grandchildren. So, you can imagine that a lot of time, patience and TLC has gone into Fairview’s plants over the years and we know what will (and will not) work in our area. So the next time you are thinking about adding some color to your yard, consider turning to the experts at Fairview!

Jo Ann and the greenhouse staff at Fairview have come up with a list of our favorite plants, a few of Jo Ann’s specialty plants, as well as a few plants that are new additions to our vast selection. Below, you will find a VERY SMALL sample of what you can expect to find during your next visit! We hope to see you soon & enjoy!

Jo Ann’s Specialty Plants

Lollipop Plant - Pachystachys lutea (pictured)
Subtropical plant with bright yellow bracts containing short white flowers. Blooms late spring through summer. Can be grown inside in bright light. 36-48 inches tall; part sun - full sun; great in containers; attracts hummingbirds.

Shrimp Plant - Justicia Brandegeana
Subtropical plant with pink bracts containing tiny white flowers. Blooms late spring through summer. Can be grown inside in bright light. 24-36 inches tall; bracts resemble a shrimp; attracts hummingbirds.

Streptocarpella
A relative to the African violet. Velvety green leaves covered in a profusion of lavender flowers. Morning sun afternoon shade. Easy to grow and carefree. Great hanging basket. Likes to stay moist, but no wet feet. Flowers from spring to first frost. Hummingbirds are very attracted to this plant.

Princess Flower - Tibouchina
Tropical annual with velvety green leaves and three-inch purple blooms. Can reach 12 feet high if overwintered for many years. Fertilize weekly; full sun; blooms midsummer.

Hawaiian Snowbush - Breynia Rosea picta
Drought tolerant. The more sun the more colorful the foliage. Pink, green and white leaves; up to five feet tall if overwintered; loose, open habit; great height in containers.

New to Fairview

Dark blue plumbago - Auriculata
Thrives in hot dry conditions. Blooms all summer long through fall. Can be used in containers or beds. One to three foot, wispy shrub-like plant with beautiful blue flowers. Full sun to part shade. Can be cut back to promote bushiness.

Variegated Sky Blue Thunbergia - Laveifolia
Beautiful large, sky blue flowers on green and white leaves. Great for containers or in the landscape on a trellis.

Variegated bleeding heart vine - Clerodendrum thomsoniae variegate
Green leaves with white flowers with red centers. Can take partial to full sun. Can be used in containers, hanging baskets, or in the landscape. Can be used as a houseplant if kept in bright light. Attracts hummingbirds.

Fairview’s Favorites

Dragon Wing Begonia
Fast growing, carefree heat tolerant plant with glossy green leaves covered with red, pink, or coral flowers. Blooms consistently spring through fall. Can be used as a houseplant, hanging basket, in containers or in the landscape. Feed monthly.

Geraniums
Zonal: This isn’t grandma’s plant anymore. The most reliable summer annual around. Pest-free and drought tolerant. Part to full sun. Beautiful foliage and nonstop flowering spring through fall.
Ivy geraniums: Trailing habit; self cleaning
Scented: Bought not for the flowers, but for the scent. Lemon, rose and peppermint are examples of the scent. Citronella variety is a mosquito repellant.

Petunias
An extremely popular flower that is used in hanging baskets, containers and in the landscape. Full to partial sun. Fairview carries the most popular varieties:
Wave: Cascading habit
Supertunia: Mounding habit; low maintenance; heat tolerant; very vigorous
Superfinia: Flowers have a veining appearance; great in window boxes
Tiny Tunias: Miniature petunias; flowers are an inch across; mounding and spreading; an unbelievable amount of flowers per plant
