Fairview's 2009 Tomato Selection & Care

Ahhh, the sound of snapping a tomato off of the vine out of your own garden. From seedlings or small plants to voluptuous, juicy fruits that come in an array of hues, all grown with your help and the kiss of mother nature's rays. Tomatoes are, by far, one of the most grown fruits during the summer months. Even if you don't have a garden, per say, you probably have a container on your patio or deck that is set aside for these little jewels. From salad tomatoes, to salsa tomatoes and tomatoes made for canning, your options are virtually endless. Below, you will find the various varieties of tomatoes we are carrying this year at Fairview, along with some helpful growing tips and information on companion plants (plants that will actually help your tomatoes!) We carry a wide range of products (mentioned in our veggie article) to ensure success!

Traditional Tomatoes

Beefsteak: One of the best tomatoes for sandwiches. This hearty fruit is also one of the largest you can grow. Indeterminate.

Better Boy: A great disease resistant tomato. This flavorful tomato will produce fruit in just about any climate. Indeterminate.

Early Pick: This plant produces fruit earlier than most others. It has a very solid flesh as well as a great taste and brilliant red color. Indeterminate.

Big Boy: A very sweet smooth-skinned fruit that can weigh in at over a pound. Produces high yields and is disease resistant. Indeterminate.

Roma: This versatile medium-sized tomato is a must for Italian cuisine. Works well in salsa and is a great canning tomato, too. Determinate.

Big Beef: Extra large 10-12 oz. red fruits that are firm, juicy and highly flavored. Indeterminate.

Celebrity: 8 oz. deep red, firm, crack-free, disease resistant fruit. Determinate.

Lemon Boy: New to Fairview! Lemon yellow 6-7 oz. sweet, mild fruit. Perfect for slicing. Disease resistant and easy-to-grow.


Heirloom Tomatoes

Brandywine: Many have called this tomato one of the best tasting on the market. This very luscious, spicy fruit can weigh in at more than one pound per tomato. Indeterminate.

German Johnson: One of the top southern heirloom tomatoes. This fruit is non-acidic and is great for slicing and on sandwiches. Big producer. Indeterminate.

Mortgage Lifter: Very meaty with few seeds. Good producer in drought. Fruits 2-4 lbs. Pinkish Red. Indeterminate. ---Pegi’s Favorite

Rutgers: Great for canning, good disease resistance. Excellent flavor. Determinate.

Cherokee Purple: Extremely sweet. 12-16 oz. fruits; unique purplish color. Indeterminate.


Grape Tomatoes

Gabrelle Grape: 3/4 oz. red fruits. Crack free. Perfect for salads Determinate.

Tea Cup Red: Large sweet red grape-sized fruit. Compact & bushy. Great for containers. Grows 6-8 inches. Determinate.

Tumbling Tomato Red/Yellow: Cascading branches 20 inches or more. 1-2 inch red or yellow sweet fruits. A great hanging basket tomato. Indeterminate.

Sweet Olive: A new grape tomato with sweet bite-sized red fruit. Indeterminate.

Sweet Baby Girl: Smaller than usual cherry tomato. Fruit rarely cracks. Great shelf life. Indeterminate.

Spoon Tomato: World’s smallest tomato, the size of peas. Ten will fit on a regular teaspoon. Orange-red with mild flavor; also an Heirloom. Indeterminate.

Red Grape: Excellent for salads. Similar to brands found in grocery stores. Determinate.
