Fairview’s Top 10 Houseplants & Care, continued

Room temperature tap water is the best. Chlorine in tap water will not harm your plants, but fluoride can damage sensitive plants.

Most plants benefit from an occasional misting. Not only does this keep your plant clean from dust, but it also discourages spider mites. Mist plants in the morning when temperatures are cooler and the plant is not in the direct sun.

Below, we have come up with a list of our Top Ten Houseplants. It should be noted that a systemic should be used on all of the houseplants listed below, except the Venus Fly Trap. Systemics help to prevent the common household critters from attacking your plants. Reapply every two to three months. As mentioned before, we also recommend misting your houseplants occasionally. Doing so helps to remove any dust and debris that may accumulate on the foliage. After all, plants like to breathe, too!

10. Rex Begonia
This household favorite is known for its fantastic foliage that commands attention in any environment. Begonias can be found in many different sizes, leaf shapes and colors. They do not like direct summer sun or being overwatered.

Care Instructions: In winter, no less than 60 degrees F. Likes bright light but no direct sun. Should be rotated ocassionally. If they become rootbound, they will start to lose their color. Water sparingly during the winter months.

9. Pellaea (Button Fern)

This plant’s foliage displays many characteristics with its foot-long arching fronds that arise from a creeping rootstock. Pairs of button-like leaflets grow along a wiry stalk.

Care Instructions: Unlike most relatives in the fern family, the button fern prefers to be located in dry surroundings instead of moist conditions, due to the round leaflets that point downward in an arched position. This plant likes to be misted twice weekly and left to dry out. Excellent choice for offices or rooms without a lot of direct sunlight.

8. Chlorophytum (Spider Plant)

This is one of the most popular houseplants around! Its adaptability makes it a proven winner for almost any environment. This fast growing plant will certainly grab your attention with its arching variegated leaves and small white flowers (in spring and summer) followed by tiny plantlets. If left on the mother plant, these plantlets grow to give an attractive display. Removed from the mother plant, they can be used to start new plants.

Care Instructions: Likes a well-lit spot away from direct sunlight. Water from spring to autumn; water sparingly in the winter. Mist leaves occasionally in the summer. Great plant for hanging baskets or in an office environment. Very versatile.

7. Ali Ficus

This spectacular tree is famous for its violin-like foliage, both in shape and size. It has become one of the hottest indoor plants because of its flexability and ability to add style to a home or office setting.

Care Instructions: Likes minimum 60 degrees F in winter. Keep compost moist. Mist foliage occasionally. Likes a lot of indirect light.

6. Neon Pothos

A great starter plant for newbies or for those with not-so-green thumbs. Heart-shaped chartreuse leaves with a trailing growth habit adorn this lovely plant. Great as a hanging basket by itself or in mixed arrangements with other plants. This lovely plant, that thrives on neglect, will liven any room!

Care Instructions: Medium to bright light (indirect light). Let dry slightly between waterings.
