Fairview’s Top 10 Houseplants & Care, continued

Room temperature tap water is the best. Chlorine in tap water will not harm your plants, but fluoride can damage sensitive plants.

Most plants benefit from an occasional misting. Not only does this keep your plant clean from dust, but it also discourages spider mites. Mist plants in the morning when temperatures are cooler and the plant is not in the direct sun.

Below, we have come up with a list of our Top Ten Houseplants. It should be noted that a systemic should be used on all of the houseplants listed below, except the African violet and Bromeliads. Systemics help to prevent the common household critters from attacking your plants. Reapply every two to three months. As mentioned before, we also recommend misting your houseplants occasionally. Doing so helps to remove any dust and debris that may accumulate on the foliage. After all, plants like to breathe, too!

10. African Violet
These houseplants are covered in bright gem-toned flowers that are nestled among elegant cashmere leaves. They are developed to be tough, reliable and affordable choices.

Care instructions: Do not let water get on the leaves as this will cause spotting. Medium to bright light but no direct sun. Use a self watering pot (available at Fairview) or water from the saucer and drain after twenty minutes. Use an African Violet fertilizer every time you water or blooming may cease.

9. Hoya (Indian Rope) Wax plant Hanging Basket

The long curled leaves of this tropical plant are enough to make you fall in love with it! Although, when it flowers... watch out! The flowers are hot pink and have a wax-like appearance, almost making them seem artificial. One “flower” actually consists of thirty to fifty star-shaped flowers together that creates one large flower in the shape of a ball. You may find a lovely aroma around the flowers during the evening hours (varies). Overall, a lovely plant that is very hardy and easy-to-grow!

Care Instructions: Let dry out between waterings. Fertilize monthly during growing season. They love to be root bound, but when transplanting be sure to use a succulent planting mix. Keep above 60 degrees F. Medium to bright light.
