9. Bouganvillea This is one of those plants that you are either an avid fan of, or well, quite the opposite. This lovely plant comes in a multitude of colors including pink, lavender, salmon, orange or cream, and features both green or variegated foliage options. It works well in hanging baskets and can be trained to grown on a trellis. This plant loves full sun and, once established, is drought tolerant. Though, it should be noted that this plant is not for everyone, as it has thorns... so beware! Fun Fact: What most people think are the flowers are actually bracts. Features: Drought Tolerant Fertilize: Fertilize monthly during the flowering season. Let the soil dry out between waterings. |

8. Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata) This fast growing plant (up to ten feet tall) is one of the only true blue flowers around. Soft blue flowers adorn this plant that can be pruned as a vine or as a shrub. If left to grow in it’s natural state, you will have a truly lovely plant that has a very loose shape in a somewhat spry growth habit. When planting, make sure it has good drainage and is placed in full to part sun. Once the plant is established, it is drought resistant. Blooms spring through fall. Features: Attracts Butterflies, Deer Resistant, Drought Resistant Fertilize: Apply Miracle Grow every ten to fourteen days. |

7. Hawaiian Snowbush (Breynia disticha) Once you see this plant, you will never forget it as it is beautiful! Though it does not flower, it has striking white/pink and green variegated foliage. It needs at least six hours of sun a day to maintain it’s beautiful foliage color, but make sure it does not have all day sweltering sun as this can be overkill! This plant can either be grown as an ornamental shrub or as an accent plant in containers. (Note: If using as a container plant, make sure the pot is large enough to support its root system.) The Hawaiian Snowbush is a part of the euphorbia family and can reach 3’-6’ T x 2’-3’ W, if overwintered indoors. Keep soil moderately moist, but no wet feet. If bringing indoors, cut back 1/3 and then prune to desired shape in the spring. Features: Great Foliage Color and Texture Fertilize: Fertilize with a product that has a high middle number, because they love phosphorus. |

6. Canna Lily (Cannaceae) This striking plant can be used as a backdrop in the landscape or in containers for height. It serves dual duty, delivering both beautiful foliage and flowers! The leaves are veined with variegated orange, red or yellow color and they bloom in shades of pink, orange, yellow, red and many more! The possibilities are really endless for this summer beauty! As if these features weren’t enough, hummingbirds just love this plant! Cannas are tuberous-rooted perennials, so if planting in the ground, make sure to plant them where they have room to grow and multiply, as they make a spectacle in masses! The foliage (on 3’-6’ stalks) is fantastic summer through fall and the flowers will rebloom if they are deadheaded. Note: They need at least six hours of sun a day.
