3. Shrimp Plant (Justica brandegeeana & Pachystachys lutea)
(Justica brandegeeana) This variety features flowers that are white that extend from red bracts ... that actually look like shrimp! You can grow this plant in your landscape as an annual shrub or choose to grow it as a feature plant in containers. If overwintered as a houseplant indoors, this plant can grown anywhere from two to four feet tall. Note: It is best to cut back stems when bracts turn black in the fall; doing so will promote bushiness. Can take full sun, but flowers better in part sun.

(Pachystachys lutea) This subtropical plant, also known as the lollipop plant or as a golden shrimp plant, can grow three to five feet (or taller) if overwintered indoors. This full sun plant features white flowers that appear on yellow bracts and blooms spring through fall. Makes an excellent focal point in flower beds or as height in containers. Note: Cut back before bringing indoors to prevent legginess.

Features: Attracts Hummingbirds and Butterflies
Fertilize: Fertilize every ten days when in bloom.

2. Hibiscus (rosa-sinesis)
Without a doubt, this is one of the most popular tropical plants we have at Fairview! This stunning plant features huge blooms (4”-5” W) in a variety of hues (reds, pinks, white, yellow), with a wide variety of throat colors as well (blooms last 1-2 days each). It is most commonly used in containers (not concrete) by itself, but rest assured you can make a stunning combination container that features this stunning tropical! The hibiscus can be used inside or outside, as long as it gets enough sun. (Note: Hibiscus loves full sun, but can take some shade. If plant does not bloom put in a sunnier location.) It will continue to bloom profusely as long as the temperatures remain 55 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
If hibiscus is overwintered in a sunny spot indoors, make sure to prune it in early February before the buds appear. Doing so will help the hibiscus rejuvenate itself and bloom again in the spring.

Features: Attracts Hummingbirds
Fertilize: Keep soil moist and fertilize with 5-10-5 houseplant fertilizer monthly May through October/November.

Oh yeah, this plant loves water so make sure to keep it moist!
