  Fairview's 2009 Vine Selection, continued

Akebia (Akebia quinata)
“Chocolate vine” is a good evergreen vine for shadier spots. The five lobed leaf adds textural interest and the dark purple or white flowers show themselves in early April.

Climbing Hydrangea (Hydrangea anomala subspecies petiolaris)
Like chocolate vine, the climbing hydrangea is a great vine for shady areas. Mature specimens are complete show stoppers when in full flower and growing up and around large pines. Dark green foliage is the backdrop for large clusters of showy white flowers.

  Trumpet Vine (Campsis radicans)
Trumpet vine is unique from the rest of this list in that it flowers in summer, as opposed to spring when many of our other shrubby vines bloom. Trumpet vine flowers can be red, yellow, or orange, and are great for hummingbirds. This is a great vine for full sun or part shade.

Vines in Perennials

Clematis
Twining vines with spectacular flowers in shades of purple, pink, white and some multi-colored. These vines are perfect for covering a trellis, fence or lamp post and are especially a favorite for your mailbox post. It is not necessary to prune clematis to promote flowering. Pruning is usually done in order to prevent an untidy tangle of shoots. Most varieties like to be grown in full sun in well drained soil. Be sure to mulch at base of plant to keep roots cool. Some favorite varieties include Clematis Henryi (white blooms), Jackkmanii (dark purple blooms), Nellie Moser (Pale pink with red bar down the middle of each petal), Niobe (very dark ruby-red) and a very fragrant fall bloomer, clematis paniculata, (creamy-white).

Vines in the Greenhouse

Mandevilla
This vine is one of the most hardy, stunning vines around! It features 2”-4” trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of pink, white or red. This quick-growing vine is treated as an annual in the greater Raleigh-area and loves full sun and the heat! Once it is established, it is really rather drought tolerant. Truly a stunning addition to any yard! Blooms early spring until first frost. Attracts hummingbirds.

Bleeding Heart Vine (Clerodendrum thomsoniae)
Talk about an unusual yet beautiful plant! It features beautiful white calyx with red petals and variegated foliage. It is one of the very few plants that can take full sun to part shade. The Bleeding Heart Vine is related to the beauty bush and lantana, so it goes without saying that the hummingbirds love it! This versatile plant can be used indoors as a houseplant or grown outside, either in the ground or in a container (both on a trellis), as well as in a hanging basket. Blooms late spring throughout summer.

Snail Vine (Vigna caracalla)
This vine is new to Fairview for 2009 and is very fragrant! It features blooms that are purple and white and resemble a snail because of the curling effect. It blooms late summer through early fall. It is treated as an annual in the greater Raleigh-area and loves full sun!

  Senecio
This lovely vine features orange, daisy-like flowers against green foliage. Once established, this full sun plant is rather drought tolerant (which is great during our hot summer months). Along with blooms spring through fall, you can expect fluttering butterflies all season long, as they adore this vine. A great addition to any yard.
