  Fairview's 2009 Vine Selection, continued

The Passion Flower (Passiflora)
Most people use this vine as an ornamental annual, but if our winters are not harsh, you may find it emerging year after year. When planting, make sure you place it in an area that is somewhat protected: it needs bright light but doesn’t want all day, full sun. Once established, you will enjoy fragrant blooms May through July. You can try to overwinter this plant by cutting it back by 1/3 and bringing in the garage (make sure it is near a window), or simply leave it outdoors and heavily mulch it in the ground. Attracts Hummingbirds and Bumble Bees, Is Larval Food for Butterflies.

  Moonvine (Ipomoea alba)
This fragrant vine holds true to its name as its 5” - 6” white flowers open only at dusk. Bright white flowers against large, heart-shaped green leaves make this vine a great cover for a privacy trellis. It likes full sun and moist soil. This fast-growing annual will bloom late spring throughout summer.

  Morning Glory (Convolvulaceae Ipomoea)
This stunning vine is adorned with 4” funnel-shaped blossoms in shades of blue and purple against lush green, heart-shaped foliage. It needs full sun and looks great when paired with the moonvine! Produces round seed pods which hang from the vine, thus making it an excellent reseeder! Let dry between waterings.

Dipladenia
Cousin to the mandevilla, this plant has showy pink, trumpet-shaped flowers with a yellow throat against dark green smooth leaves (which are smaller than the mandevilla). Works better in a container or hanging basket, rather than a trellis, as it has a more compact growth habit (3’ - 4’ H). Much like the mandevilla, this full sun plant is drought tolerant once established. Attracts hummingbirds.

Bouganvillea
This lovely plant comes in a multitude of colors including pink, lavender, salmon, orange or cream, and features both green or variegated foliage options. It works well in hanging baskets and can be trained to grow on a trellis. This plant loves full sun and, once established, is drought tolerant. Though, it should be noted that this plant is not for everyone, as it has thorns... so beware! Needs at least six hours of direct sun. Water thoroughly and let dry out between waterings.

Blue Sky Vine (Thunbergia grand flora)
Everyone knows how difficult it is to find a plant that produces blue flowers, especially blue flowers that like the sun! Well look no further because this is the plant for you! This sun-loving vine is fast growing and the hummingbirds just love it! Beautiful blue blooms abundantly adorn this vine from late spring throughout fall. Wherever you decide to plant it (in the ground or in a container), make sure it has support/structure to grow upon.

Potato Vine (Solananum)
This subtle vine is a tender perennial in our area and comes in both variegated or green leafed varieties. The green leafed variety features clusters of pale blue flowers, while the variegated variety is adorned with clusters of white flowers. It enjoys full sun to partial shade and blooms spring through fall.

  Candy Corn Vine (Maniettia inflata)
This striking vine comes equipped with reddish-orange and yellow tubular flowers that resemble the fall candy favorite: candy corn. This fast growing annual needs full to part sun and is beautiful in mixed containers or on a trellis. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
